On November 15, 2015, Department of Education Board Officials implied the policy known as ‘Least Restrictive Environment’ (LRE).

This includes research findings supporting the inclusion of students with disabilities, historical initiatives of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to ensure students with disabilities are in the LRE, data results at the federal, state, regional, and school district levels relating to LRE for both preschool and school-age students with disabilities, and a proposed policy to improve LRE placements and results for students with disabilities.

The purpose remand immediate action from parents, school districts and communities supporting IEP learners. To ensure that each special education department in NYS is providing high quality instruction without the stress of the environment.
